After the Omega Seamaster served MOD divers from 1967 to 1971 as the issued watch of choice, the MOD approached Rolex and asked that they produce a reference 5513 Submariner with some of the same modifications found on the Omega. What resulted was three different MilSubs: the 5513, the 5517, and a double-stamped 5513/5517.
Rolex Milsubs (Military Submariner) were specially made for the British Military and they have several unique characteristics that include: 1. Sword Hands. 2. Second indices running around the entire bezel. 3. Solid Springbars that are soldered into the watch.
By the end of the seventies, Rolex introduced the ref. 5517, a Milsub only ever supplied to the military and not made available to the general public. Every example of this watch was fitted with the 60 minute bezel and the large, flat, sword-style hands. The Submariner ref. 5514 housed the Rolex caliber 1520, which also powered the MilSub ref. 5517.
